Why this matters now
More homeowners now ask ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Siri or Google's AI Overviews “who's the best roofer near me?” before they ever scroll the map. These tools usually name only a few companies. If you're not one of them, you may never make the shortlist.
Where AI assistants get their answers
AI assistants answer local questions by searching the web and summarizing what they find. ChatGPT's search feature has relied on Bing among its sources, and Google's AI Overviews draw on pages Google already indexes and trusts. That means two things: your business has to be findable in those search indexes, and what other websites say about you carries a lot of weight.
Step 1: Make your business facts identical everywhere
Your business name, address, phone, hours, services and service area should match exactly across your website, Google Business Profile, Bing Places, Apple Business Connect, Yelp, BBB, Facebook and industry directories. Conflicting details make it harder for AI systems to be confident you're one real, established business.
Step 2: Win reviews — with details
Ask every happy customer for a review, and encourage them to mention the service and town (“replaced our AC in Hackensack the same day”). Reviews that describe real jobs give AI assistants specific evidence to repeat. Respond to reviews too — it shows an active, accountable business.
Step 3: Answer homeowners' questions on your site
Add direct, plain-English answers to the questions people actually ask: what you do, where you work, what common jobs cost, how fast you respond, whether you offer financing or emergency service. Put the answer in the first sentence. Add FAQ sections and structured data (schema markup) so machines can read the facts reliably. Create a page for each core service and each town you want to win.
Step 4: Get mentioned on trusted sites
AI assistants lean on third-party sources: local news, trade associations, “best of” lists, supplier and manufacturer directories, the Better Business Bureau, chamber of commerce listings and community discussions. Each credible mention is another source confirming you exist and do good work.
Step 5: Make sure AI crawlers can read your site
Check that your robots.txt and any security or CDN settings aren't blocking search and AI crawlers, submit your sitemap to both Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools, and keep important content in plain HTML text rather than only in images or videos.
Step 6: Track it
Pick 10 questions homeowners would ask about your trade and town, ask them in ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google every month, and record whether you're mentioned and which sources are cited. Those cited sources tell you exactly where to get listed next.
