Quick answer

Why isn't my business showing in the Google Map Pack?

Google ranks local results on three things: relevance (how well your profile matches the search), distance (how close you are to the searcher) and prominence (how well-known and well-reviewed you are). Most home service companies miss the Map Pack because of a wrong primary category, a thin Google Business Profile, too few recent reviews, inconsistent business listings, or a website without dedicated service and town pages.

How Google decides the Map Pack

Google says local results are based mainly on relevance, distance and prominence. You can't move your address, but you can control relevance and prominence — and that's where most contractors leave rankings on the table.

1. Your primary category is wrong or too broad

Your primary Google Business Profile category carries a lot of weight. A company that does mostly roof replacement but lists “Contractor” as its primary category is telling Google it's less relevant for “roofer” searches. Pick the most specific primary category for your main revenue service, then add accurate secondary categories.

2. Your profile is thin

Fill in every service, service area, business hours, products, photos of real jobs and team, and the business description. Post updates regularly. A complete, active profile gives Google more reasons to show you.

3. You don't have enough recent reviews

Review count, rating and how recently you've received reviews all influence prominence — and they decide who homeowners call. Ask after every job with a direct link, and reply to every review.

4. Your listings don't match

If your name, address or phone differ between your website, Google, Bing, Apple, Yelp, Facebook and directories, Google is less confident about you. Clean up old addresses, tracking numbers and duplicate listings.

5. Your website doesn't back up your profile

Your website should have a dedicated page for each core service and for the towns you serve, with your name, address and phone, real photos and clear calls to action. Link your Google profile to the most relevant page, and make sure the site is fast and works well on mobile.

6. You're trying to rank far from your address

Your profile ranks strongest near its verified address. To win neighboring towns, combine service-area pages, reviews that mention those towns, and paid options like Local Services Ads and Google Ads that aren't limited by distance in the same way.

7. A rule violation is holding you back

Keyword-stuffed business names, virtual-office addresses or duplicate profiles can get a listing filtered or suspended. Keep your profile within Google's guidelines.
